Christmastime Travel

From 09 – 11 December 2016.

The sound of children laughing, bells ringing from the horse-drawn sleighs, trumpet music from the palace tower, huts loaded with delicious gingerbreads, cookies and freshly-baked waffles from granny’s waffle iron on an open wood fire. Around the palace, on Goetheplatz, in the palace courtyard and in front of the orangerie you’ll find markets set up where merchants peddle their wares. Craftspeople demonstrate venerable craft arts and storytellers give their best to earn a few coins. The aroma of wild game roasts and sausages wafts from the palace courtyard, and people crowd in to warm up and enjoy a tasty mulled wine or punch.

Large tents are bedecked with all kinds of decorations, and inside you’ll find warm fur beds and a bonfire, steaming cauldrons with delicious stews, roasted wild game and other specialities from the Middle Ages. Jugglers vie for the visitors’ attention, musicians play and round out the medieval picture.

Wintertime in the Medieval City

A cold wind blows over the city walls through the small alleys and makes the frozen panes of the shop windows rattle. Snowflakes fall on the houses nestled against the Berleburg Palace. One can make out candle glow and voices from behind the out-of-square doors. But what does it really look like behind the walls in the pubs? What did people do in winter? Join us for a casual tour through the wintertime wonderland of the Berleburg city centre with the princely palace as the centre of the historic heart as the tour goes along the no longer extant city walls, watchtowers and city gates. During the tour, you’ll learn about the lives and ways of the residents of the medieval city and cast a glimpse into their customs and traditions, some of which continue to this very day. Afterwards, you will have a better understanding of how a winter evening may have been 300 years ago while enjoying a tasty dinner by candlelight and a smouldering fire.

  • 2 nights with half board in a cosy double room
  • 1. Evening: snowball fight in the palace park, followed by a casual meet and greet and a 3-course menu
  • 2. Evening: After going back in time to the medieval city, you’ll take your dinner by a warm fire and think over the “voices from the past”.

You will round out your little time travel with a stroll in the winter forest landscape on the day of your departure.

The hike takes approximately one hour, depending on temperatures, minimum of 4 participants.
